Discipleship is at the heart of congregational life in the church. It was Jesus who said, “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).

Those words of Jesus provide the goal of and passion for Nazarene Discipleship International (NDI). While the methods may change, the objective is always the same – making Christlike disciples.

The mission of Nazarene Discipleship International (NDI) is to carry out the Great Commission to children, youth, and adults in preparation for a lifetime of being and making Christlike disciples in the nations.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR, Rev. Lorna Bartram:

The work and ministry of NDI is vast in scope and potential. Every Nazarene church has a form of NDI within its ministry as they engage in discipleship, Christian education or small groups on any level. Due to the breadth of the mandate for NDI our district NDI has determined that, in addition to the local ministries of discipleship that are mobilized by local pastors and church leaders, at the district level, we have the capacity to intentionally engage in a limited number of ministry focus points. We wish that we had greater opportunities to embrace a fuller mandate for our District but we have found that a focused approach fits our District’s circumstances at this time. Perhaps in the years ahead we will be able to expand the scope of NDI on CPD but for the present we will continue to focus on supporting our Camp ministry; promoting resource based supports that NDI global provides; strong engagement in the Ministry Festival (along with the LAMP, NYI and NMI leaders); promotion of song worship and practice as a tool of Christian education and discipleship; Oasis and, of course, offer support for whatever forms of education and discipleship local churches engage in week by week.

Looking ahead wouldn’t it be fantastic for all of the churches on our District to strengthen their Christian education programs across the generations? This could be done by way of inter-generational teaching of some description or by means of developmentally staged teaching. Many of you are engaged in this work, instilling faith principles and scripture as well as good, solid theology and in that work, you are passing on the faith. But what about our churches where the priority of scheduling Christian education (for all ages) built on solid theological foundations, consistently established so as to endure over time, is not at its best or perhaps non-existent. We need to be clear that where an understanding of the critical necessity for Christian education, in its broadest sense, has slipped from focus and the priority for its implementation has diminished, there is a long-term impact on the wellness of the church and the kingdom. We cannot neglect or take lightly this responsibility. Yet, evidence suggests that we do have some turning around to do in terms of commitment and consistency in this regard.

There has never before in history been a time when the broadest scope of resources are at our disposal, literally at our fingertips. Yet, we have in many cases abandoned consistent, stable Christian education. This is evident by the lack of intentional inclusion of such spiritual practices in the schedules of our churches and by the challenge to find leaders willing to commit consistently to responsibilities for relevant and meaningful periods of time. Please, if your church has strong, steady and stable ministry in this particular realm, Christian education (Sunday and weekday, including small groups and more) then we appreciate your understanding as this concern is directed to those of us in our local churches who need to and can take up the cause in order for consistent, dedicated and committed promotion and teaching of God’s word and the training and equipping of the generations in service and leadership, occurs over the time of their lives.

Ministry does not happen without leaders…period. We’re calling on you, all of you, to be leaders even if that leadership seems to you like a small place of service. Just do it! Everybody Leads Somebody Sometime…yes, this is the LAMP slogan but it applies everywhere else, in NYI, iLEAD, SDMI, NCM, NMI and more…IT’S NOT NEW. Let God use your influence – you have influence – don’t be misled by anyone, including your own internal voice, or that of the enemy, to defeat you in this regard. You matter and you have something to contribute and you can make a difference no matter your age. Make no mistake. But, those of us in positional leadership who hold higher offices on the District and at the local level have to be intentional about setting the pace, creating open doors and doing the sometimes-harder work of allowing younger ones to gain places of responsible leadership and train them in those places of service.

As NDI chair could I speak to our pastors for a moment? let me say that I could recite a list of pastors in the era of my youth who were heavily involved in leading camps and other youth gatherings and in just being at events, something we have begun to see reborn in the LAMP program and our Camps. They were a huge influence on us and you have so much to offer that is critically important to our youth and children, regardless of your age or years of service. Can I encourage you to engage in these opportunities whenever you can – you have more influence by your presence than you know. You also hold more keys than others do to inviting younger people to take on roles of responsibility and leadership in the life of your church. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see growing representations of young leaders across our District? I know you can help make that a reality.

In Exodus 4:2 Moses was asked by God; “What is that in your hand?” Very specific and very clear and it was a “get at it” and “use it” kind of question. The responses of Moses were centered around a “but what if” and “why I can’t” state of mind. But God’s question was fashioned to call for faith, obedience and action – pretty standard pattern for God isn’t it? He basically was saying, do it, use what you have and I, I will do more than you can imagine.
